Baboon Proofing Considerations using Poly-Bars

If you are concerned about metal bars obscuring your view, when baboon proofing your property, you may opt for clear bars. Here are some tips from local installers ‘Poly-Bars’ on how to ensure that your clear bars are install correctly to minimise the risk of baboons accessing your home.

Spacing

A 60mm space between each bar is optimal for preventing even small baboons from entering your property. This also creates a greater visual deterrent for potential burglars.

NB: This refers to the physical space between the bars. Not the centre to centre of each bar.

Length of bar

The longer the distance between fixing points the more flex the bar will have and although the Poly-Bars get their strength from their flexibility this does get to a point where it works against itself. In addition, the more they flex the greater the distance between the bars. The thickness of the bars helps to combat this. We recommend the following thickness according to the distance between fixing points.

  • 700 and less than = 6mm Poly-Bar
  • 1000 and less than = 8mm Poly-Bar
  • 1200 and less than = 10mm Poly-Bar

Please note, the thicker the bars will always offer more security.

Fixtures

NEVER use aluminium fixtures. They may seem secure initially but are very prone to metal fatigue and if the bars are flexed continuously then the fatigue is passed into the aluminium fixtures which in turn will cause them to shear off.

On Aluminium windows we recommend that you only use stainless steel rivets 4.8mm and make sure they are long enough to completely penetrate through the required anchoring surfaces. Better still would be to use the Stainless steel 4.8mm Multi-Grip Rivets but these should only be used by professionals as they can easily be misused.

On wooden windows we recommend that you only use stainless steel wood screws with a non-standard head for difficult removal. Keep in mind that you may want to remove them should you need to treat/paint/maintain your windows.

When drilling the holes in the Poly-Bars, it is critical that the hole drilled in the Poly-Bar is at least 1mm bigger than the fixture you are using. Polycarbonate does expand and contract with temperature changes and you need to allow for this around your fixture.
