PURPOSE
To develop and lead professional and specialised Wildland Fire Fighting ground crews, which are able to offer a high level of service and expertise as well as integrated fire management capabilities.
JOB OUTPUTS
- To lead and manage Wildland Fire Fighters Crews
- Adhere to all regulations in terms of BCEA, Health and Safety, (IOD’s reporting) etc
- Performance management, discipline and appraisal of crews on and off the fire line
- Crew Administration: maintain weekly time sheets, leave forms, etc
- To develop and motivate the Wildland Fire Fighters Crews
- Crew Development & Training
- Contribute to Wildfire Library / Skills Program
- Facilitation of Crew Training
- Manage Fire Fighting Services
- Logistical planning (arrangements for crews and responsibilities)
- Work in different roles on and off the fire line
- Record Keeping and preparation of post fire and operational reports
- Relationship management
- Client communication
- Building positive relationships with external agencies
- Being professional to public and staff
- Asset Management
- Costing & Procurement of tools & equipment
- Efficient management of standby premises to required standards
- Management of firefighting equipment to ensure highest level of safety and professionalism
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Conservation, Environmental, Forestry degree or diploma (or similar)
- Wildfire experience
- Fire line Safety Training
- Computer Literacy (Microsoft, Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Valid South African Driver’s License and hold a Public Drivers Permit
- Highly mobile to travel extensively and be available for deployment across the country and internationally
- Police Clearance
- Pass the arduous physical test (as prescribed in the approved Provincial Veld Fire Work Group Standards)

- ICS 100 to 300 Qualification
- ICS Divisional/Group Supervisor
- Single Resource Leader Crew; S-230
- Base Station Operator certificate for aerial communication
- First Aid Level 3
COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS
- Leadership Orientation: ability to communicate with, mentor/ train, engage and motivate firefighting crews
- Communications: ability to communicate well in English (verbal, written)
- Project Management: ability plan, organise and manage multiple projects and resources
- Customer / Public Orientation: ability to engage positively with public, customers, staff
- Adaptable: must be flexible to adjust quickly in fast changing environment
- Mental resilience to manage diverse teams in emergency situations
- Emotional Intelligence
