Cape Town


To manage activities which prevent baboons from moving beyond the boundaries of the natural environment and into the surrounding urban areas of Cape Town with minimum disturbance or disruption of baboon natural behaviour


  • To lead and manage a team of field rangers and supervisors o Training and development of teams
    • Adhere to all regulations in terms of BCEA, Health and Safety, (IOD’s reporting)
    • Performance management, discipline, and appraisal team
    • Administration of weekly time sheets, leave forms,
  • Implement Baboon Management activities including:
    • Monitoring of daily baboon activities
    • Ensuring that baboons do not enter the urban environment
    • Assist with the capture, rehabilitation, and welfare of injured/sick baboons
    • Assist with management of emergencies (fire, traffic, crime)
    • Assisting with the implementation of community education initiatives
    • Management of incidences of human-wildlife conflict as per program protocols
  • Oversee the Collection and Reporting on daily baboon monitoring activities including:
    • Troop Numbers
    • Births and deaths
    • Troop movements
    • Location of sleeping sites
    • Raid Incidents
    • Injured/ ill baboons
  • Asset Management
    • Maintenance of tools, equipment, and vehicles
    • Storage and retrieval of tools, equipment, and vehicles
  • Administration including:
    • Obtain the necessary permits from CapeNature and the landowner(s).


  • Conservation, Natural Sciences, Forestry degree or diploma (or similar)
  • Experience of working with animal (mammals) and basic understanding of baboons
  • Previous experience managing teams would be beneficial
  • Computer Literacy (Microsoft, Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Valid South African Driver’s License and hold a Public Drivers Permit
  • Police Clearance
  • Physical fitness and ability to work long hours in the field (12 hour shift x 4 days)
  • Ability to work in a hazardous environment (crime, dangerous animals, rocky terrain)

  • Communications: Ability to communicate well in English (verbal, written)
  • Organisational Skills: ability to plan, organize and implement service delivery requirements
  • Customer / Public Orientation: ability to engage positively with all individuals (public, customers, staff)
  • Adaptable: must be flexible to adjust quickly under fast changing environment, ability to work accurately under pressure and have good problem-solving skills
  • Mental resilience: to manage diverse teams in rapidly changing, possibly hazardous circumstances
