PURPOSE

To successfully implement the objectives of a Baboon Management Programme designed to create an optimum human-wildlife balance in a specific urban area of Cape Town.

JOB OUTPUTS

  • To lead and manage a team of Field Managers, Field Rangers and Supervisors
    • Training and development of teams
    • Ensuring adherence to all regulations in terms of BCEA and Health and Safety
    • Performance management, discipline and appraisal of direct reports
    • Management of timesheets, leave forms and other administration duties
  • Manage Baboon Monitoring activities including:
    • Monitoring of daily baboon activities
    • Ensuring that baboons do not enter the urban environment
    • Assist with the capture, rehabilitation and welfare of injured/sick baboons
  • Collection of data and reporting on baboon and operational activities
  • Asset Management
    • Costing & Procurement of tools & equipment
    • Management of tools, equipment and vehicles
    • Training on use of equipment and assets
  • Relationship Management
    • Sensitive management of incidences of human-wildlife conflict
    • Regular reports to stakeholders
    • Implementation of public relations strategy

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS AND QUALITIES

  • Conservation, Natural Sciences, Forestry degree or diploma (or similar)
  • Minimum two years’ experience of working within the conservation field (Behavioural Ecology / Human Wildlife Conflict)
  • A good understanding of animal behaviour and basic understanding of baboons
  • Previous experience managing teams would be beneficial
  • Computer Literacy (Microsoft, Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Valid South African Driver’s License and hold a Public Drivers Permit
  • Police Clearance
  • Physical fitness 
  • Able to work in a potentially hazardous work environment

  • Communications: Ability to communicate well in English (verbal, written)
  • Project Management: ability plan, organize and manage plans to prevent baboons from entering the urban environment
  • Customer / Public Orientation: ability to engage positively with all individuals (public, customers, staff)
  • Adaptable: must be flexible to adjust quickly under fast changing environment, ability to work accurately under pressure and have good problem solving skills
  • Mental resilience: to manage diverse teams in rapidly changing, possibly hazardous circumstances
